Review I Saw You in My Dream (2024) BY Jojo

"I Saw You in My Dream" offers a sweet and playful ride into the world of enemies-to-lovers romance with a supernatural twist. The story revolves around Ai and Yu, two childhood rivals who can't seem to get along in real life, yet suddenly find themselves growing closer in an entirely different realm—dreams. What begins as humorous and antagonistic encounters quickly transforms into surreal romantic moments that unfold nightly in Ai's slumber. This shift opens up a narrative that flirts with fate, destiny, and the thin line between dreams and reality.

From the beginning, the series captures attention with its quirky and appealing concept. Ai’s confusion and irritation as he dreams about his so-called nemesis in increasingly affectionate situations is portrayed with both charm and emotional depth. The way these dream sequences influence his waking life creates a nice balance between comedy and budding romantic tension. There's a certain freshness in the way their interactions evolve—not too dramatic, but enough to keep viewers intrigued. Ai’s internal conflict, his hesitancy to accept the change in his feelings, and Yu’s surprisingly gentle presence outside of the dream world add complexity to the characters without losing the show’s lighthearted tone.

The chemistry between the two leads is one of the strongest elements of the show. Their interactions—full of teasing, misunderstandings, and growing intimacy—are believable and grounded in years of shared history. Even when they argue, there’s a layer of familiarity and comfort that makes their eventual romantic shift feel natural. The actors manage to convey a growing warmth that slowly replaces the tension, which makes their journey from childhood antagonists to potential lovers compelling to watch.

Adding to the charm is the subplot involving Yo and Ing. Though given limited screen time, their presence brings additional humor and insight into the struggles of navigating relationships. Their story is told with a simplicity that contrasts nicely with the more dreamlike, surreal vibe of Ai and Yu's arc. Moreover, the familial side characters, especially Ai’s parents, create a grounded environment that adds emotional texture. Yu and Yo’s interactions with Ai’s family are genuine and often touching, further humanizing the main characters and giving the story a comforting, homely feel.

However, the series doesn't fully live up to the promise it builds early on. As the plot progresses, the pacing becomes noticeably sluggish. Scenes begin to repeat similar beats—romantic tension, minor misunderstanding, emotional distance, and tentative resolution—with little actual forward momentum. While the slow-burn approach works in moderation, the repetition starts to undermine the emotional stakes. It feels as though the writers struggled to sustain the novelty of the dream concept and fell back on familiar tropes to fill the runtime.

The supernatural element, which initially sets the series apart, is underutilized. At first, the dreams add mystery and raise intriguing questions—why is this happening, and what does it mean? But these questions are never fully explored. The dream world ends up serving mostly as a romantic backdrop rather than a meaningful narrative device. There’s little suspense or tension built around the supernatural mechanics, which makes its resolution feel underwhelming. A deeper exploration of this aspect could have added significant depth to the story and enhanced the emotional payoff.

The repeated use of love rivals and jealousy as obstacles between Ai and Yu also feels unnecessary and a bit lazy. Given their long-standing relationship, it’s puzzling how often they allow third parties to derail their progress. This device, used more than once, contributes to the dragging second half and undermines the strength of their connection.

Despite these flaws, "I Saw You in My Dream" remains an enjoyable watch for those looking for something light, warm, and sprinkled with fantasy. It doesn’t aim for heavy drama or profound emotional revelations, but instead offers a cozy and romantic tale with enough charm to hold your attention. If you're in the mood for something gentle and sweet that doesn’t demand too much emotional investment, this series is a pleasant escape—even if it doesn’t fully deliver on the magic it hints at in the beginning.
